Manda Epton, a 54-year-old fashion designer from Sydney, Australia, recently fulfilled her lifelong dream of becoming a mother. After 11 years and 23 fertility treatments, she finally gave birth to twins at the age of 50. Manda’s journey was filled with challenges, including three miscarriages and the decision to embark on her fertility journey alone after her long-term relationship ended.

“I started doing treatments when I was 39 because I had always dreamt of having a family,” Manda shared. “I continued dating over the years but always felt the pressure as I still wanted children. I decided to do it alone with the help of a sperm donor and egg donor through IVF.”

Manda’s determination led her to spend over £40,000 ($75,000 AUD) on various fertility treatments. She underwent multiple rounds of IVF and IUI procedures, but unfortunately, they were unsuccessful. Manda even considered adoption, but the waiting list was too long for single women.

However, when a friend recommended Cape Fertility in South Africa, Manda saw a glimmer of hope. Not only was the clinic more affordable than her previous treatments in Australia, but her friend had also had a successful pregnancy there. Manda seized the opportunity and chose an egg donor from South Africa and a sperm donor from Denmark.

“I spent £8,100 ($15,000 AUD) at the clinic and had two embryos transferred, as it was my last chance and I really wanted at least one of them to be successful,” Manda explained with a touch of humor. “I was in the stirrups like Bridget Jones during the procedure.”

After returning to Australia, Manda anxiously awaited the outcome of her pregnancy. At her seven-week scan, she received the news she had been longing for – she was expecting twins. Despite some health challenges during her pregnancy, including constant vomiting and injections, Manda gave birth to two healthy baby girls via c-section in August 2018.

Manda now cherishes her role as an older mother, embracing the wisdom and the freedom it brings. “I feel as though, at 54, I’m a bit wiser and don’t do technology the way younger parents do these days,” Manda said. “So I’m out here spending more time playing with them at the park and doing fun activities, rather than ignoring them and being on my phone.”

As a freelance fashion designer and business owner, Manda can fully enjoy motherhood and devote herself to her daughters. She believes that becoming a mother at 50 was the best decision she has ever made.

Manda’s inspiring journey proves that age should never be a barrier when it comes to fulfilling your dreams. With determination, resilience, and a little help, anything is possible.
