Zaki Ridge in food bag

A heartwarming story of resilience and love, Zaki and Malika Ridge, the miracle twins, are about to celebrate their first birthday. Born three months prematurely, weighing only 2lbs 10oz and 2lbs 5oz, their journey to survival was nothing short of remarkable.

A Safe Haven in Sandwich Bags

When doctors realized that the twins would struggle to maintain their body temperature, they devised a creative solution. Sandwich bags, acting as a makeshift womb, kept the little ones safe and warm during their seven-week stay in the neonatal intensive care unit. Their fragile skin remained protected, thanks to the quick-thinking doctors.

A Long-Awaited Reunion

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, parents Rifit Akram and Barry Ridge were unable to immediately meet their precious babies. Two agonizing days passed before they laid eyes on Zaki and Malika, with wires surrounding them in incubators. Rifit reminisced, “When we were able to see them, I just had to hold their hand through the incubator.”

The Power of Sibling Love

Malika quickly recovered, going off oxygen within a week. Zaki, on the other hand, faced additional health challenges, including a high heart rate and requiring a blood transfusion. During this trying time, the bond between the twins strengthened. Rifit shared, “Malika was brought over to see her brother every day. She kept him strong and alive.”

A Celebration of Life

On their momentous day, the twins now weigh a healthy 20lbs. Rifit and Barry are grateful for their children’s remarkable progress and the unwavering support of their older sisters, Amira and Miley. The family has planned a joyous celebration, with a Cocomelon-themed party to mark this incredible journey from the tiny sandwich bags to flourishing health.
