Getting married is a beautiful celebration of love, but it can also come with a hefty price tag that can cause stress. This was the predicament a New York father found himself in when his daughter asked him to pay for her extravagant $200,000 destination wedding.

The father took to Reddit, under the thread titled “Am I The A*e?” to seek advice. He had initially promised to cover the costs of his daughter’s wedding, but he was taken aback by the extravagant plans and the hefty price tag. The wedding was supposed to take place in the scenic beauty of New Zealand with a guest list of one to two hundred people.

Struggling between wanting to be a good father and not wanting to show off wealth, the father felt torn. He shared his dilemma on Reddit, saying, “My wife feels I should do it because we can afford it, but I find it to be a pointless showing of wealth. Now my daughter is not talking to me, nor is my wife. Which got me thinking should I bite the bullet and essentially burn money, and alienate family members to make my daughter’s dream wedding a reality?”

Many Redditors chimed in with their thoughts. One user pointed out the financial burden of a destination wedding and suggested that if the daughter couldn’t afford it herself, she shouldn’t have one. The user also mentioned the possibility of the father having to pay for flights and hotels for the couple and their families. They added, “Not to mention the fact that she’s thrown a strop and isn’t talking to you tells me she doesn’t deserve it.”

Another user suggested a compromise: the father should set a budget that he is comfortable with, and the daughter can plan the wedding within that amount. The user explained, “Establish the amount of $$ you are willing to provide and give her the budget. Tell her anything above that is on her and her fiance. Make sure to tell her if that includes travel, etc for the bridal couple and family members. If she wants a blow out wedding, she can pay for it.”

The father has not provided any updates other than the fact that his daughter is now avoiding him and calling him a “jerk.” It’s heartbreaking to see the strain this situation has caused within the family.

Being a parent often means finding a balance between kindness and realism, and this story serves as a reminder of the challenges that can come with it. What would you do if you were in this father’s shoes? Share your opinion by spreading this article!
