An Elderly Man's Touching Poem Brings Tears to Nurses

Old folks in nursing homes eagerly await visits or even a simple phone call from their families. Sadly, these moments of connection often don’t happen, leaving them disappointed and alone.

But when this particular elderly man passed away in his nursing home, the nurses discovered a hidden treasure in his room that brought tears to their eyes.
Among the belongings that hold memories of a whole lifetime, they found a heartfelt poem. This unexpected find unraveled a story of emotions over the years, capturing the essence of the man’s experiences.

As the nurses read the verses, they were drawn into a tale that left a lasting mark on their hearts. It made them realize the impactful stories woven into the lives of those who are often overlooked in their final days in a nursing home.

What do you see, nurses? What do you see? When you look at me, do you see a cranky old man, not very wise, with faraway eyes? A man who dribbles his food and makes no reply when you say, “I do wish you’d try!” A man who seems oblivious to the things you do and is always losing a sock or a shoe? A man who lets you do as you will, with bathing and feeding, to fill the long day? Is that what you’re thinking? Is that what you see? Then open your eyes, nurse. You’re not looking at me.

I’ll tell you who I am, as I sit here so still, as I eat at your will.
I’m a small child of 10, with a loving family. A young boy of sixteen, dreaming of love. A groom at twenty, keeping my vows. At twenty-five, raising my own children. At thirty, watching my children grow. At forty, my children have left, but my wife remains by my side. At fifty, I have grandchildren playing around me. Dark days come as my wife passes, but I think of the love we shared. In old age, my body may fail, but my spirit remains. I remember the joys and the pains, and I continue to love and live.

This poem serves as a reminder that inside every aging body, a young heart still dwells. It reminds us to open our eyes and see beyond appearances. So let us cherish the elderly and recognize the value they bring to our lives.

In our hearts, we are never old! Please SHARE this amazing poem with your family and friends!
