Brenda Lee may not be as widely recognized as some of the other musical icons of the 1960s, but her songs have had a lasting impact. Just think of how her classic tune “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” instantly puts you in the holiday spirit.

At 78 years young, Brenda Lee’s journey in the music industry started when she was just a young woman. Despite her small stature of only four feet, her powerful voice brought her unprecedented international fame and made her the most successful female artist of the 1960s.

Born as Brenda Mae Tarpley in 1944, she began her musical adventure in the late 1940s and rose to fame in the 1950s. Incredibly, she charted an impressive 55 times during her career, earning her the well-deserved title of the most successful female artist of the 1960s. Her story is one of incredible talent, perseverance, and determination.

Tragedy struck when Brenda’s father, a construction worker, passed away when she was just eight years old. Suddenly, young Brenda found herself responsible for her younger brother, older sister, and a mother who worked in a cotton factory. Taking care of her loved ones became Brenda’s steadfast commitment. She experienced sheer happiness when she earned her first $20, as it meant she could contribute to the well-being of her family. Even at a young age, Brenda understood the importance of helping and caring for those she loved.

Described as “a pioneer of early rock and roll” in the Encyclopedia of Georgia, Brenda Lee achieved international fame in the 1960s. Despite her remarkable success, she remains incredibly humble and grateful to all those who have supported her throughout her career.

When asked if she considers herself a legend, Brenda humbly replied, “I don’t consider myself a legend!” She goes on to say, “I’m just a lucky girl doing what I love, and there are many people who have worked hard to make my dreams come true. So if I’m a legend, then they are too.”

Brenda’s musical journey began in 1956 when she joined country star Red Foley for a show at the Bell Auditorium near her hometown of Augusta. With her incredible talent that far surpassed her youth, she captivated millions of viewers on Foley’s Ozark Jubilee Show. The following year, Brenda signed with Decca Records and moved to Nashville, Tennessee. She recorded early rockabilly classics that blended country and rhythm and blues, showcasing her signature vocals on songs like “BIGELOW 6-200,” “Little Jonah,” and “Let’s Jump the Broom.”

Despite being in the spotlight and performing in front of large audiences, Lee never felt nervous. She had been performing in public since she was three years old, and the stage has always felt like home to her. In 1957, Brenda earned the nickname “Little Miss Dynamite” for her powerful rendition of “Dynamite.” And at the age of 13, she released the Christmas hit “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” a beloved holiday standard that continues to bring joy to listeners to this day.

Over the years, Brenda continued to release hits such as “Sweet Nuthin’s,” “All Alone Am I,” and “Fool #1.” Her songs often reflected her experiences as a young woman and, despite her limited personal experiences, painted a picture of love and heartache. Her mother wouldn’t allow her to date, so Brenda graduated without truly understanding the mysteries of young love.

However, at the age of 16, Brenda sang about the bittersweet nature of love in “Sorry” and expressed her desire for true love in “I Wanna Be Wanted.” Both songs became consecutive hits, capturing the hearts of fans around the world, even while Brenda was still in school. Shortly after turning 18, she met Ronnie Shacklett, with whom she happily married and celebrated 60 years of marriage.

Life on the road wasn’t always easy for young Brenda Lee. She celebrated her 12th birthday in Las Vegas but felt somewhat isolated during her time there. As a child, she was prohibited from entering the casinos and missed out on the typical Las Vegas experience. However, the stage always brought her joy and happiness, turning it into her personal paradise.

One of the unexpected joys of life on tour has been the friendships Brenda has formed along the way. She had the opportunity to meet and mingle with legends like John Lennon, who she found surprisingly intelligent and gentle. It was truly astonishing that the Beatles enjoyed her music. Additionally, Brenda formed a lasting friendship with Elton John, who was in awe of her extraordinary talent. She famously danced with Elvis Presley and developed a strong bond with Little Richard, who admired her music and unwavering faith. In fact, both artists received the Outstanding Artist Award at the 2019 Governor’s Arts Awards, which also marked Little Richard’s final public performance before his passing.

Faith has always played a significant role in Brenda’s life. She attributes her personal and professional success to the support of God and her husband, Ronnie. She considers herself incredibly fortunate to have found a partner who is loyal, devoted, and loves her unconditionally. This is a testament to the strength of her faith and the guidance she has received from a higher power.

In addition to her musical contributions, Brenda Lee continues to inspire and serve as a role model for young stars like Taylor Swift. In fact, Taylor wrote a personal essay titled “A Rare Peer” in a book called “Women Walk the Line: How Women in Country Music Changed Our Lives,” where she dives deep into Brenda’s influence.

Even though Brenda is no longer performing, her music continues to be cherished by fans around the world. Her Christmas hit, “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” has become an enduring symbol of the holiday season, ranking consistently year after year. It is not uncommon to hear Brenda Lee’s voice while shopping in stores and experiencing the surreal nostalgia that her music evokes.
