The trend of tiny houses is here to stay. As real estate prices skyrocket, more and more people are looking for ways to downsize. If you’ve ever driven past a big-box retailer like Lowe’s or Home Depot, you may have noticed their assortment of sheds. But have you ever considered living in one of them?

Discover the TR-1600

A few years ago, Home Depot sold Tuff Shed’s TR-1600 model, and customers are eagerly awaiting its restock. This shed caught the attention of some individuals who saw the potential for it to be transformed into a charming tiny home.

Upon closer inspection, these cute sheds in the parking lot reveal that they can be more than just storage spaces in your backyard. The TR-1600 is a large unit, measuring 16′ by 16′, with a base price of $10,888. But if you want to paint it and add extra interior space, be prepared to invest over $22,000. And that’s without factoring in drywall, insulation, electricity, or plumbing. However, even with those additional expenses, it’s still a more affordable option compared to real estate in most American cities.

Is it a Good Investment?

A couple decided to test the liveability of the TR-1600. With a septic system and well water already in place because they had a home on their property, they transformed the shed into a cozy dwelling at a cost of $65,000.

Take a Bare-Bones Tour

YouTuber, Original Texan, visited Home Depot to take a look at the TR-1600 model in the parking lot. His video tour of the shed has since attracted the interest of nearly half a million viewers. At first glance, it may be difficult to envision the potential of this pressed wood tiny home. But the video tour provides a good idea of the available space and what you can expect if you decide to call it home, even part-time.

Meeting the Needs of Small Space Seekers

Many viewers were excited about the idea of smaller structures. One commenter said, “That is a pretty cool structure. That’s about all I would need, nothing big and fancy. That place would be perfect when fully finished and insulated, out in the woods.” Original Texan responded, and that was a year ago. Since then, the housing market has only become more expensive.

Although Tuff Shed is currently not manufacturing the TR-1600 (at least through Home Depot), they offer a variety of other models for those intrigued by the idea. Check out the video below to see what a big-box store shed can offer.
