As we grow older, we often come across stories that make us question the state of humanity. These stories may be short, but they reveal a lot about the times we live in. They don’t necessarily restore our faith in humanity, but rather, they tear it down. Today, I want to share some of these stories with you. Get ready to have a good laugh, because these anecdotes are not only ridiculous, but they might just be true, and you’ve probably witnessed similar situations yourself.

Let’s start with a comical encounter at a McDonald’s drive-thru. My husband and I pulled up to the window and handed the cashier a $5 bill. Our total was $4.25, so I also gave her an additional 25 cents. To my surprise, she exclaimed, “You gave me too much money!” I calmly explained that I was aware of that, and it was so she could give me a dollar back. Confused, the cashier called the manager for guidance. After repeating my request, the manager returned the 25 cents to me, saying, “I’m sorry, but we don’t do that kind of thing.” To add to the confusion, the cashier then handed me 75 cents in change. The lesson learned: never confuse the employees at MacD’s!

Next, let me tell you about an encounter with a repairman during a garage door repair. The repairman informed us that one of our problems was having a “large” motor on the opener. I mentioned that we had the largest motor available at that time, a 1/2 horsepower. Surprisingly, he shook his head and insisted that we needed a 1/4 horsepower motor instead. Confused, I explained that 1/2 was indeed larger than 1/4, but he insisted, “NOOO, it’s not. Four is larger than two.” Needless to say, we never contacted that repairman again!

Living in a semi-rural area, we often witness interesting encounters. One of our new neighbors actually called the city council office to request the removal of a DEER CROSSING sign on our road. Can you guess the reason? Well, according to our neighbor, “Too many deer are being hit by cars out here! I don’t think this is a good place for them to be crossing anymore.” It’s moments like these that make you question the logic of some people.

Now, let’s move on to a hilarious incident at a Mexican fast-food place. When my daughter ordered a taco, she politely asked the person behind the counter for “minimal lettuce.” To her surprise, the person apologized, saying they only had iceberg lettuce. Apparently, the concept of “minimal” lettuce didn’t quite register. It’s these little moments that leave us shaking our heads in disbelief.

During a routine airport check-in, I had an amusing conversation with an airport employee. He asked me, “Has anyone put anything in your baggage without your knowledge?” Naturally, I replied, “If it was without my knowledge, how would I know?” To my amusement, he smiled knowingly and nodded, saying, “That’s why we ask.” It’s the simple humor in these exchanges that can lighten our day.

Lastly, let me share a story about a pedestrian light on a corner. I was crossing the street with a co-worker who had a cognitive impairment. She asked me about the purpose of the beeping sound coming from the pedestrian light. I explained that it signals blind people when the light is red. Surprisingly, she responded, “What on earth are blind people doing driving?!” It’s moments like these that make us appreciate the wide range of perspectives in our society.

In conclusion, these stories might leave us shaking our heads, but they also provide moments of light-hearted laughter. Let’s embrace these amusing encounters and remember that humor can help us navigate the ups and downs of life.
