Retirement is an exciting chapter in life, offering the chance to savor its joys without the constraints of work. For Marty and Jess Ansen, an Australian retired couple, this meant embarking on an extraordinary journey of a lifetime – 51 consecutive cruises. Their story is not just one of adventure, but also of a cost-effective alternative to traditional retirement homes.

A Remarkable Voyage

Marty and Jess have been passionate about cruise holidays for years. However, like many others, their travel plans were put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When the opportunity finally came in June 2022, they decided to make up for lost time. They boarded the Coral Princess, a ship renowned for its indulgent buffets, entertainment, and even table tennis matches.

What was initially a short vacation turned into an epic 500-day odyssey. Marty explained, “Eventually, I said to my agent, ‘Look, whatever comes, book it,’ and that’s how it got to be such a long cruise.” Surpassing everyone else on the ship, including the captain, the couple booked 51 back-to-back cruises, creating a record-setting journey.

A Special Bond

Onboard the Coral Princess, Marty and Jess have become legendary passengers and part of the ship’s family. The hotel manager, Ren van Rooyen, describes their presence, saying, “We always make a joke that I go away and I come back, and it’s like coming to see my family – my mum and dad again – they’re like my second mum and dad on board.”

Enjoying the perks of their extended cruise, such as all-inclusive meals and daily housekeeping, the Ansen’s have found a fulfilling and affordable alternative to traditional retirement living.

Retirement at Sea: An Economical Choice

The Ansen’s cruising lifestyle has led them to an interesting realization – it is more cost-effective than living in a retirement home. Challenging the conventional notion of retirement planning, they have found a way to have their daily needs taken care of while enjoying a remarkable voyage.

Daily Adventures

While some may tire of the sea after a week, Jess and Marty have a routine to keep themselves healthy and entertained. They start each day with an hour of table tennis, adding fun and fitness to their adventure. Jess shares, “We do it together, and we have a lot of fun.” These games set the stage for indulging in the cruise’s sumptuous buffets.

Living Lifelong Dreams

With over 450 days of continuous cruising, Jess and Marty remain committed to their unique way of life. If given the chance, they would continue their voyages indefinitely. Their story stands as a testament to the idea that retirement can be an opportunity to live dreams to the fullest.

In the twilight years of their lives, Marty and Jess Ansen have discovered a rewarding and unconventional path to retirement. Their story is a testament to the possibilities that await those who dare to break from tradition and pursue their dreams. For them, retirement means endless horizons and the vast expanse of the open sea.
