Retiring doesn’t have to mean settling into a retirement home. Marty and Jess Ansen are showing the world that there are alternative ways to enjoy your golden years. Instead of opting for a traditional retirement, they decided to embark on an epic adventure – 51 consecutive cruises!

Their journey began last June when they boarded the Coral Princess, two years after the strict Australian coronavirus lockdowns were lifted. Since then, this older couple has been living life to the fullest from the deck of a cruise ship, taking in the sights and sounds of the world. And who can blame them? With 24-hour access to delicious food and the opportunity to make new friends, it’s truly a retiree’s paradise.

While some people may switch from one cruise to another, Marty and Jess have made the Coral Princess their home for 450 days and counting. They have no plans of leaving anytime soon, with a goal to stay onboard for at least two years. How did they manage to book 51 consecutive cruises, you might ask? Marty works closely with a travel agent who keeps an eye out for available slots, allowing them to extend their stay on the ship.

Their extended stay has made them quite the celebrities among the cruise line. Passengers often request to meet them and hear their incredible story. The hotel manager, Ren van Rooyen, describes them as loyal and dedicated. To the crew, they are like a second set of parents, bringing warmth and joy to the ship.

This isn’t the couple’s first experience with cruising – they’ve always loved being out at sea. But when faced with the high costs of a retirement home, they chose the more affordable option of living on a cruise ship. And they don’t regret it one bit. From enjoying delicious meals, attending shows, and dancing the night away, they make the most of every day.

Their daily routine includes playing ping-pong for an hour each morning, followed by a relaxing time on their balcony with a couple of beers. The housekeepers take care of their daily chores, leaving Marty and Jess with more time to enjoy their retirement. They’ve even confessed that they’ve forgotten how to make a bed properly!

In about eight months, they will temporarily disembark from the Coral Princess and spend some time on land. But it won’t be long before they’re back on board, eagerly looking forward to continuing their life on the cruise ship.

Marty and Jess Ansen are an inspiration to all retirees who are looking for unconventional ways to spend their golden years. They prove that retirement doesn’t have to be limited to a retirement home; it can be a thrilling adventure filled with new experiences and lasting friendships. So, if you’re ever in need of retirement ideas, consider following in their footsteps and embark on an extraordinary journey at sea!
