In 1968, the talented actress Jane Fonda starred in the hit movie “Barbarella,” based on a popular French comic book. Directed by her then-husband Roger Vadim, the film became a massive success. Now, Hollywood has announced plans to remake Fonda’s iconic film, but with a new lead – the talented American actress Sydney Sweeney, known for her roles in “Euphoria,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and other popular shows.

The news of the “Barbarella” remake broke in October, with Sony Pictures as the production partner. While details about the film are still scarce, including the director and other cast members, one thing is clear – Jane Fonda is not pleased about the idea of someone else taking on her beloved role.

In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Fonda confessed that she tries not to dwell on the remake because she has concerns about its potential success. She shared, “I try not to [think about it], because I worry about what it’s going to be.”

Moreover, Fonda questioned how Sony Pictures would be able to reimagine “Barbarella” with a feminist twist while featuring Sydney Sweeney. In the original film, the focus was not on feminism but rather on Fonda’s sexy and ass-kicking portrayal of the character.

“I had an idea of how to do it that [original producer] Dino De Laurentiis, when he was still alive, wouldn’t listen to,” Fonda explained. “But it could have been a truly feminist movie.”

The 1960s film followed the adventures of Barbarella in the 41st century as she searched for the scientist Durand Durand, played by actor Milo O’Shea. Durand had created a dangerous Positronic Ray capable of wreaking havoc worldwide. Though the original film didn’t make a big splash at the box office, it later gained a cult following thanks to Fonda’s popularity, especially after her controversial actions during the Vietnam War.

The film’s bold sexuality and eroticism propelled Jane Fonda to become one of the hottest stars of the 1960s and a symbol of sensuality for millions. Over the years, many attempts have been made to revive “Barbarella,” particularly after it achieved cult classic status. One such proposal was a sequel titled “Barbarella Goes Down,” set to be directed by Robert Rodriguez and starring Rose McGowan alongside Fonda. However, this project never came to fruition.

So, the question remains: Will the “Barbarella” remake capture the hearts of audiences once again? Only time will tell.
