Known as the “real actor’s actor,” Coster made a significant impact with his unforgettable performances in various soap operas throughout his illustrious career. However, his most iconic role was as the wealthy and charismatic Lionel Lockridge in the popular soap opera Santa Barbara, captivating audiences throughout the 1980s and 1990s on NBC.
Coster’s daughter, Dinneen, recently paid a heartfelt tribute to her beloved father via Facebook, reminiscing about his incredible contributions to Hollywood. She wrote, “There is great sadness in my heart this evening; my father, actor Nicolas Coster, has passed on in Florida at 9:01 pm in the hospital. Please be inspired by his artistic achievements and know he was a real actor’s actor! I will remember him as always doing his best and being a great father. Rest In Peace.”
Born in London, England, in 1933, Coster’s family migrated to the United States to seek refuge from the looming threat of World War II and Adolf Hitler. “I arrived as a very little boy in Canada, escaping what was to become the Second World War,” he shared with a French fan site for Santa Barbara. “My American mother brought her three children then to the USA, where I stayed until sixteen.”
A career in acting beckoned Coster after he participated in a speech contest at his Los Angeles high school. Impressed by his performance, a public speaking teacher became his mentor and helped him hone his presentation skills, nurturing his dream of becoming a celebrated actor.
Following his studies at the Royal Academy Of Dramatic Art in Great Britain, Coster launched his acting career in his early twenties, securing a part in the anthology series The United States Steel Hour. Throughout the next few decades, he graced the screens of many famous programs such as Charlie’s Angels, Another World, One Day At A Time, and One Life To Live, earning a dedicated following along the way.
Not only did Coster excel in front of the camera, but he also embraced the world of Broadway. As a standby for the musical Seesaw, where he worked alongside Giancarlo Esposito and Michele Lee, he showcased his versatility and talents in the theater.
However, his breakthrough came in 1984 when he landed the pivotal role of Lionel Lockridge on Santa Barbara, captivating viewers with his portrayal in over six hundred episodes of the daytime drama. Reflecting on his character, Coster shared, “He was presented as a spoiled rich guy, who has fun, is naughty, but has his redeeming qualities.” Lionel’s love for his children, his adventurous marriage, and his overall zest for life endeared him to audiences.
