A Loving Couple’s Journey to Parenthood

Many couples face difficulties when trying to conceive, and sometimes they must explore alternative options. Sadie and Jarvis Sampson are one such couple who found themselves in this situation. Despite trying various methods, it seemed like nature was working against them.

According to Sadie, they tried everything from ovulation tests to fertility monitors, but nothing seemed to work. They even sought advice from friends, family, and strangers, but still had no success. For 14 long months, they tried, prayed, and waited, only to be met with negative pregnancy tests. It became clear that they would need assistance.

Seeking help from doctors only provided minimal guidance. Sadie was advised to lose weight, and she took that advice to heart, undergoing gastric bypass surgery and losing 28 pounds. Her OB/GYN acknowledged the progress, bringing hope to the couple.

“I was over the moon about that,” Sadie shared. “Finally, we got something other than a no! We got a ‘not right now,’ and we were thrilled.”

However, despite Sadie’s weight loss, they still couldn’t conceive. The disappointment was overwhelming. Sadie had always felt destined to be a mother, but it seemed like her dreams were slipping away. They began to accept that they would only have the role of aunt and uncle to their nieces and godparents to their goddaughters.

A Surprising Opportunity

One day, a friend suggested they consider fostering a baby. Though hesitant at first, they decided to speak with a caseworker and explore this option. There was always the fear of growing too attached to the child they were fostering, but fate had a different plan for them.

The caseworker informed them that the birth mother had chosen them to be the baby’s permanent parents. It was a dream come true. Overnight, they went from not having any children to becoming parents. The joy and disbelief were indescribable.

“We went from not having any children, to the possibility of fostering one, to ‘You guys are parents!’ overnight,” Sadie excitedly recalled. “I listened to the caseworker as she talked, still in disbelief. I hung up and called my husband! ‘Babe!! They want us to adopt the baby! They want us to be parents,’ I screamed. ‘Wait! REALLY?! I thought they just wanted us to foster him!’ he said. ‘Nope! They want us to be his mom and dad,’ I said.”

The Journey Continues

The baby was born prematurely at 33 weeks, weighing just 4 pounds and 5 ounces. He was so tiny that he fit in one of Jarvis’s hands and required a feeding tube.

After sharing the news on social media, their friends and community rallied around them, quickly supplying them with the necessary baby items. They proudly posted pictures of themselves wearing T-shirts that read “families don’t have to match.”

In 2021, their family expanded further with the arrival of twin girls through embryo donation. They embraced the same motto and today, this beautiful African American couple, Sadie and Jarvis Sampson, proudly raise three wonderful white children.

Their journey to parenthood had its challenges, but their love, dedication, and willingness to explore different paths ultimately led them to a fulfilling life surrounded by their loving children.
