During a tour last year, Nelson faced a challenging decision. A member of the Willie Nelson Family Band had tested positive for COVID-19, leading him to cancel their Jazz Fest headlining gig. However, it was later revealed that Nelson himself had contracted the virus. This revelation came after a scary episode when he woke up in the middle of the night on his tour bus struggling to breathe.
Given his age, the gravity of the situation became even more evident. Nelson’s vulnerability to the virus made the health scare all the more distressing. To aid in his recovery, Nelson’s wife, Annie, shared the measures they took. They transformed their home in Spicewood, Texas, into a makeshift hospital and enlisted an entire medical unit to monitor his recovery. Annie revealed, “There were a couple of times when I wasn’t sure he was going to make it.”
With determination and the support of his loved ones, Nelson persevered. After six days, he mustered up the strength to return to the stage, and just two weeks later, he resumed his touring schedule with shows in New Braunfels, Texas. Despite the harrowing experience, Nelson maintained his trademark wit, stating, “COVID ain’t nothing to laugh at, that’s for sure.”
Since the shocking COVID scare, Willie Nelson and his Family Band have continued touring. They recently attended the Farm Aid 2022 Music Festival in Raleigh, North Carolina, where they were joined on stage by a stellar lineup of artists including John Mellencamp, Margo Price, Chris Stapleton, and Sheryl Crow, among others.
