The three-part docuseries follows the scandal of how hackers exposed the details of 32 million unfaithful married people in 2015. High profile individuals, including TV stars and US government officials, are thought to have been affected. The website at the center of it all, Ashley Madison, still operates today with the tagline “Life is short. Have an affair.”
The documentary, Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal, tells the firsthand stories of people affected by the leak, including former Ashley Madison customers. One particular couple, Sam and Nia Raden, were a picture-perfect Christian couple who frequently made YouTube videos about their marriage. However, this perfect image was shattered when Sam was exposed as a member of Ashley Madison.
Sam admits in the documentary that while he had no desire to leave his wife, he sought something exciting in his life. He now sees using his real details on the website as a mistake. Despite feeling betrayed, Nia forgave Sam since he hadn’t met with any other women in real life.
Nia expressed her shock at websites like Ashley Madison existing in the first place and was surprised that Sam would have been drawn to it, as it went against his usual morals and character. Nevertheless, the couple is still married and remains steadfast in overcoming the scandal.
The director of the documentary, Toby Paton, expressed empathy towards those who were signed up to Ashley Madison before the leak. Rather than berating them, the aim was to understand why they were drawn to the site and explore what was going on in their relationships. Additionally, emphasizing the importance of forgiveness, Paton highlighted the struggles and difficulties people go through.
Not everyone shares this empathy, though. Some viewers criticized Sam, questioning his actions and whether he could truly be considered a good husband. However, the couple’s decision to fight for their marriage stands firm.
