I hope you have some tissues nearby because this story will surely bring tears to your eyes. It’s about an incredible little boy named Leland Shoemake who left behind a beautiful message for his parents before his untimely departure from this world.
Leland was just six years old when he tragically passed away on September 25th. He was battling Balamuthia mandrillaris, a brain-eating amoeba. Despite his young age, Leland showed incredible bravery throughout his treatment.
When Leland’s parents returned home without their son, they discovered a note that he had left for them. The note was found in their living room, a place where he loved to draw and create art. When Leland’s father, Tim, stumbled upon the note, he couldn’t hold back his tears and immediately rushed to show his wife the precious find.
The note simply read: “Still with you. Thank you, mom and dad. Love, mom and dad.”
Upon reading these heartfelt words, Leland’s mom, Amber, was overcome with emotion. She later shared, “To say I lost it was an understatement…We cried together for the longest time.” Leland often wrote notes and drew pictures for his parents, but this one held a special place in their hearts. They decided to frame it and display it in their living room, where it serves as a constant reminder of their precious boy’s love.
Amber, in a Facebook post, described her son as a smart and curious little boy. By the age of one, Leland already knew his ABCs, numbers, colors, shapes, and 20 sight words. He had a thirst for knowledge and a love for learning, enjoying everything from the History Channel to documentaries. Leland’s hunger for knowledge even helped his parents make new friends.
Not only was Leland intelligent, but he was also incredibly sociable. He loved interacting with his parents and anyone he encountered. His loving and kind personality touched the hearts of everyone around him.
Sadly, Leland’s life was cut short before he could fully blossom. However, the note he left behind is a testament to his beautiful spirit. It’s something that every parent should see and cherish.
Amber expressed, “He was our little nerd, and we loved that about him. He loved school and loved to learn. He loved the History Channel, the weather channel, documentaries, and anything about history. He had a hunger for learning.”
Leland’s love for learning wasn’t limited to academic subjects. He had a fascination with ships like the Titanic and a passion for learning about events like World War II. He even had his favorite movie, Jaws, and admired director Steven Spielberg and actor Adam Sandler. Leland’s infectious smile could light up a room, and his love for his family and his brother was immeasurable.
This extraordinary little boy will be deeply missed by all who knew him, especially his parents. Let us send our love and prayers to Leland and his grieving family. Please SHARE this touching story with your friends and family to honor the memory of this brave young soul.
