The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, when the victim went swimming in Mango Creek in Palumpa, a remote town in the Northern Territory. The Northern Territory Police, Fire, and Emergency Services took to Facebook to report the disappearance of the child. However, initial reports suggested that the child had been attacked by a crocodile, plunging the community into shock and concern.

The recovery of the remains was an arduous task, and it took a toll on the first responders involved. Despite the devastating outcome, Sergeant Gibson commended the efforts of everyone who participated in the search.

The loss of a young life is incredibly tragic, leaving the family in a state of shock and disbelief. Sergeant Gibson acknowledged the immense pain they are going through but hoped that finding the remains would provide some sense of closure. “It’s not the outcome we were hoping for, but for the family, there is at least some small element of closure,” she expressed.

Crocodile attacks are a constant concern in the Northern Territory, which is home to an estimated 100,000 crocodiles, more than anywhere else in the world. The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the risks associated with waterways in the area. Sergeant Gibson emphasized the importance of being cautious and “crocwise” to ensure personal safety. With waterways potentially housing crocodiles, it is crucial for individuals to exercise caution when near these habitats.

This unfortunate event marks the first reported fatal crocodile attack in six years, the last one occurring in 2018. The incident has shaken the community and serves as a wake-up call to the dangers posed by these formidable creatures.

Nganmarriyanga, a remote Aboriginal community in the Daly River region of the Northern Territory, lies about 360km south-west of Darwin. The tight-knit community is deeply affected by this tragic incident, and the loss will undoubtedly be felt by all.
