All shelter dogs dream of finding their forever home, but some dogs face more challenges than others. Meet Rocky, a 3-year-old pit bull who has been in the care of Lollypop Farm, Humane Society of Greater Rochester since October 2022. Despite his charming personality, Rocky has been adopted out twice, only to be returned to the shelter.
Rocky’s unfortunate journey began when his family was evicted from their home and could no longer care for him. Since then, he’s had a few two-week adoption trial periods, but none have resulted in a permanent home. It’s disheartening for Rocky, who just wants to be loved.
“He’s a great dog, but he would thrive in a certain type of home that may be more difficult to find,” said communications specialist Lindsay Brewer. Rocky would do best as the only dog in an adults-only home. But finding the perfect match has proven to be a challenge.
A few weeks ago, the shelter posted a photo of Rocky that instantly tugged at the heartstrings. In the picture, Rocky sits alone in his kennel, head hanging low, seemingly devastated by yet another day of being passed over. The caption that accompanied the photo said, “This 3-year-old handsome guy is losing hope in finding a home. He really needs our community’s support in spreading the word about him so his new family can find him.”
The post quickly gained traction and went viral, with over 31,000 shares on Facebook and an outpouring of comments. People from all over expressed their sympathy for Rocky and hoped that he would find his forever home soon. Some even offered to pay his adoption fee.
The increased attention led to an adoption hold being placed on Rocky on December 1. However, the shelter later updated that no adopters had worked out. Despite this setback, there was a glimmer of hope when the shelter announced that Rocky had been on an “adoption sleepover” since December 7.
While Rocky’s story has captured the hearts of many, it’s important to remember that he is not the only dog in need of a home this holiday season. Lollypop Farm encourages everyone to consider adopting one of their other available dogs.
