Graduating from high school is a momentous occasion that marks a significant transition in life. It’s a time when we celebrate the hard work and achievements that have prepared us for the next chapter. But what happens when the people we love and who have supported us can’t be there to share this joyous moment? For Paul Marshall Jr., a special needs teen from Louisiana, his mother’s absence on his graduation day was deeply felt.

Paul’s mother, LaTanya Delphine Wilson Marshall, had passed away in 2010, long before Paul would walk across the stage in 2020. Despite her physical absence, Paul found a heartfelt way to include his mother in this milestone. On the day of his graduation, he went to her grave and shared his achievement, telling her all about it.

The love between a mother and child is a bond that transcends time and space. It’s a bond that supports, nurtures, and encourages. Paul Sr., Paul Jr.’s father, shared the poignant reason behind his son’s desire to include his late mother on this special day. LaTanya’s last dying words were, “I just want to see Paul Jr. graduate.” It was a wish any loving mother could understand.

In a touching video posted to YouTube, we see Paul Jr. dressed up in a button-up shirt, tie, and pants, looking dapper for his big day. Holding a bouquet of flowers, he walks through the cemetery to his mother’s grave. Once there, he speaks to her, sharing the news of his graduation:

“Mommy, I have something to say. I did it. I graduated today. And I know you’re so proud of me and happy. I love you so much.”

With love and reverence, Paul Jr. places the flowers on his mother’s grave, kisses his fingers, and touches her tombstone. The moment is filled with the beauty of an unbreakable bond and the palpable pride Paul Jr. feels as he reflects on his accomplishment. The video captures the overwhelming emotions experienced not only by Paul Jr. but also by his father, who stands witness to this tender moment.

In an interview with KSLA, Paul Jr. expressed his sadness about saying goodbye to high school and mentioned his plans to attend Bossier Parish Community College. We can only hope that Paul Jr. continues to pursue his goals and dreams, knowing that his mother would be immensely proud of anything he achieves.

Congratulations to Paul Jr. for his high school graduation. He has every reason to be proud of his hard work and dedication, as well as the beautiful way he included his mother in this celebration.
