Not to sound alarmist, but if you’re holding out hope to see Adele perform live anytime soon, it’s time to toss those dreams into the ‘let’s wait a few years’ pile. Yes, our beloved ‘Hello’ crooner has announced she’s taking an incredibly long hiatus from music. Someone pass me the tissues.

A video making the rounds on TikTok shows Adele breaking the news during her show in Munich, Germany. In her own words: ‘I have 10 shows to do, but after that I will not see you for an incredibly long time, and I will hold you dear in my heart.’

So that’s it folks, she’s pulling a Houdini on us. Representatives for Adele, in classic elusive style, were tight-lipped and did not respond to requests for comments.

Ever since November 2022, Adele’s been rocking The Colosseum Theater at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Initially, she announced this residency way back in 2021, only to do an about-face that left fans gobsmacked and disappointed when she decided to postpone. Why? Because the queen of soul herself felt her show wasn’t up to snuff.

Fast forward past a tumultuous beginning, the shows eventually took off, and Adele extended her concerts into 2023 and again into 2024. The final curtain is set to drop from October 25 to November 23 this year.

A little birdie (okay, it was Germany’s ZDF public broadcast service) revealed in July that Adele’s got other ‘creative things’ up her sleeve. In a candid chat, she mentioned, ‘I don’t have any plans for new music at all. I want a big break after this, and I think I want to do other creative things, just for a little while.’

In true Adele fashion, she added, ‘I don’t like being famous. I love that I get to make music all the time.’ And before you gasp in surprise, she’s been vocal about struggling with the spotlight. Fame, as glamorous as it sounds, isn’t all champagne and roses for this songstress.

For instance, remember that frown she sported at an NBA game in February? She later clarified that she wasn’t throwing shade; she was just annoyed at being filmed without consent. And who could blame her? Being famous doesn’t mean paparazzi have carte blanche to invade your private moments.

Ever the queen of candor, Adele didn’t shy away from telling her fans exactly what went down. ‘Do you remember that viral meme of me looking like I don’t give a flying f—?’ She joked, referring to the famous photos of her looking less than enthused at the 2022 NBA All-Star Game.

She went on to explain that she was sulking because she was being filmed against her wishes. ‘The reason I looked like my lips had filler – because I got naturally big lips, right, I don’t need filler – the reason I looked like a different person was because I was sulking, because I was like ‘these motherf—ers have come back and are filming me against my will,’ she revealed, thanks to fan-recorded video.

‘I didn’t realize they were airing it on TV, I thought it was just in the room,’ Adele added. If only there was a way to control when we’re meme-able, right?

So there you have it, folks. Our diva is taking a bow and stepping off the stage for the foreseeable future. While it’s a sad farewell for now, we can only hope she’ll return with new music that makes our hearts weep and our souls dance.

Until then, let’s cherish the beautiful, raw, and unfiltered memories she’s given us.
