By David Gottesman

At the age of 96, David Gottesman, a renowned Wall Street financier, left behind a remarkable legacy for his wife, Dr. Ruth L. Gottesman. Little did she know that her late husband had left her a staggering $1 billion in stocks. Instead of indulging herself with exotic travels or luxury goods, Dr. Gottesman made a selfless decision that is touching the lives of many aspiring doctors.

Dr. Gottesman chose to donate the entire fortune to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx. Having served as a clinical professor of pediatrics at the medical school for several years, she felt a strong connection to its mission. Even in retirement, Dr. Gottesman continues to contribute to the school as a member of the Board of Trustees.

When speaking about her incredible gift, the 93-year-old widow admitted that she was unaware of the vast sum of money her late husband had left for her. She said, “He left me, unbeknownst to me, a whole portfolio of Berkshire Hathaway stock.” This unexpected windfall led to a transformative act of generosity.

The impact of this extraordinary donation is substantial. Starting from spring 2024, fourth-year students at Albert Einstein College of Medicine will have their tuition reimbursed. For those beginning their studies in the fall, tuition will be entirely free. With the cost of tuition exceeding $59,000 per year, this gift promises to make a profound difference in the lives of future generations of medical students.

Dr. Gottesman expressed her joy and satisfaction, stating, “We have terrific medical students, but this will open it up for many other students whose economic status is such that they wouldn’t even think about going to medical school. That’s what makes me very happy about this gift.”

Currently, Albert Einstein College of Medicine has 1,070 students and an additional 239 research fellows. The Dean of the college believes that this generous donation will revolutionize their ability to attract dedicated students who share their mission.

Dr. Ruth L. Gottesman’s selfless act of philanthropy serves as an inspiring example to us all. Her gift not only secures the future of medical education but also creates opportunities for aspiring doctors who may have never imagined pursuing such a path due to financial constraints.
