A veteran unable to pay for his groceries turns around to hear a customer say “It’s our turn”

We all go through tough times in life, and when we do, we deserve the love and support of those around us to help us get back on our feet. This is especially true for the brave souls who serve their country, asking for nothing in return.

However, many veterans are left to struggle, even after their service. Some do not receive enough benefits to live on, while others do not know where to turn for help once they return to civilian life. Larry Robeson, a Vietnam veteran, knows this struggle all too well.

Larry was facing financial difficulties and didn’t know where to turn. But fate had something in store for him. He crossed paths with the Fox 5 Surprise Squad at a grocery store in Las Vegas. The Surprise Squad was there to pay for people’s groceries, and Larry happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Despite his own financial struggles, Larry had taken his friend Stephanie, a disabled fellow veteran, to the store. Stephanie shared with the Fox 5 reporter that she was buying food for herself and her dogs, but she was down to her last $50 and didn’t know what she would do after that.

Dave Hall, the reporter leading the Surprise Squad, happily informed Stephanie that he and his team would cover her groceries. Stephanie was thrilled and grateful for their generous offer. However, Dave noticed Larry standing quietly behind Stephanie.

It turns out that Larry, a friend of Stephanie’s husband, had established the Bones for Blankets club many years ago. The club aimed to provide blankets to homeless veterans who were left on the streets after their service. Larry was motivated to start the club after three fellow veterans tragically froze to death. He wanted to ensure that no more veterans would suffer the same fate.

Larry explained how he kept Stephanie company and helped her get by due to the challenges she faced as a result of her disability. He told the Surprise Squad, “No vet should be going through what she’s going through.”

Dave Hall was moved by Larry’s selflessness and was determined to help him as well. He insisted that Larry wouldn’t be leaving the store without the Surprise Squad team paying for his groceries too. Larry had only planned on buying dish soap and candy, but Dave told him, “You served us. It’s our turn to serve you now.”

Larry was in disbelief as he went around the store, picking out whatever he wanted. The total came to $278, and tears filled Larry’s eyes as Dave and the others settled the bill.

“This is just overwhelming. I’ve been taking care of myself since I was 13,” Larry said, moved by the unexpected act of kindness.
