Having a baby is always a moment filled with awe and wonder. But imagine the emotions of Isabelle and Abby Carlsen’s parents when their daughters were born conjoined at the chest and abdomen over ten years ago. These two beautiful girls shared a liver, small intestine, and even two connected hearts. Their remarkable story captivated the world as they became known as the miracle babies born at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

However, as the time for the delicate separation surgery approached, their parents faced an agonizing decision. The risks were high, with 60% of such operations resulting in mortality at the time. The procedure, performed by a courageous team of 17 doctors, lasted 12 nerve-wracking hours. The most tense moment came when they had to separate the shared liver. The weight of worry rested heavily on the parents’ shoulders.

The family endured an anxious wait, but their prayers were answered. Against all odds, both girls made it through the surgery successfully. They spent their first six months of life in hospitals, but today, it’s hard to believe they were ever joined at all. Isabelle and Abby have blossomed into confident individuals who hardly recognize their baby selves when they see old photographs.

According to their teacher at the time, Tiffany Moos, Isabelle and Abby are now vibrant, fun-loving girls who excel academically and enjoy gymnastics. They have formed lasting friendships and radiate independence. Yet, every so often, they still hold hands while walking together, a testament to the unbreakable bond they share.
