Graduation day is a momentous occasion for anyone who has completed their education. It’s a time to celebrate one’s accomplishments, surrounded by loved ones. But for this mother-daughter duo, the joy was multiplied because they achieved their goals together.

Jessica Van Wagenen and her daughter, Keelin, recently graduated from East Carolina University’s registered nurse program. This is a remarkable feat, as it’s the first time something like this has happened in the institution’s history.

“We would often be mistaken for sisters, and I would have to explain that I was the mom and we were doing it together,” Jessica shared with pride. As a former marine, Jessica had put her aspirations on hold to focus on raising her daughters. But now, as luck would have it, she decided to pursue her dreams once again, and her daughter followed in her footsteps.

“I have always been proud of my mom and admired her determination to never give up on her ambitions,” Keelin added. “Every day, I tell her how proud I am of her for pursuing what she wanted to do.”

Both mother and daughter have already begun their nursing careers. Keelin works as a pediatric nurse at ECU Health, while Jessica is an operating room nurse for Carteret Healthcare.

The experience of attending nursing school together has created lasting memories for both women. “It’s such an exciting journey, and I’m grateful to be able to share it with my daughter. We will cherish this bond forever,” Jessica said with a smile.

“It’s a unique feeling. While others may have gone to school with siblings or partners, I can proudly say I went with my mom,” Keelin added.
