Meet Sky Castner, an extraordinary young woman who has defied all odds to achieve something truly remarkable – admission to the prestigious Harvard University. Sky’s journey is anything but ordinary, as she overcame tremendous adversity from a very young age. Her story is a testament to the power of determination and the belief in oneself.
Born in the Galveston County Jail, Sky faced numerous challenges throughout her life. But with unwavering determination and the support of her single father, she has emerged as a shining example of resilience and perseverance. Despite frequent relocations, Sky’s father has been her pillar of support, ensuring that she never lost sight of her dream of pursuing higher education. Their bond and the love and sacrifice of a single parent have laid the foundation for Sky’s success.
From a young age, Sky displayed a passion for learning and excelled academically, impressing her teachers at Reaves Elementary. Recognizing her potential, she was provided with additional mentoring through CISD’s Project Mentor program. It was through this program that she met Mona Hamby, who became her mentor and played a significant role in shaping Sky’s future.
Mona Hamby, Sky’s mentor, was struck by the vibrant and determined young girl who showed immense promise. Beyond the classroom, Mona provided guidance and support, teaching Sky valuable life lessons and helping her navigate the challenges she faced. Both Sky and Mona had absent mothers in their lives, which strengthened their bond. With Mona’s dedication and belief in Sky, she was given the tools to reach for the stars.
Sky’s interest in attending Harvard grew after a life-changing visit to the campus with Mona and her husband in 2022. Inspired by the surroundings and captivated by the possibilities, Sky sought advice from Professor James Wallace of Boston University. With his guidance, she effectively conveyed her unique story and experiences in her application, making it stand out to the admissions committee.
