Six-year-old Luke surprised his mother, Amy, when he said that he has a twin in his school. It was just an ordinary day when Luke came back from school and began to share his day with his mother. But what he said next caught Amy off guard.
“Mom,” Luke started, “I swear…”
“What did we say about swearing?” Amy interrupted, concerned.
“Mom,” he continued, “I’m telling you, Luna is my twin sister!”
Confused, Amy replied, “Luke, you’re an only child, honey.”
But Luke was persistent. “No, Mom! I’m serious. Luna and I have the same birthday, and we look alike. The teachers think that we’re twins too.”
Amy tried to focus on cooking as Luke kept talking about his newfound sister, Luna. He shared details about her interests, her favorite things to do, wear, and eat. “Mom, she’s great. You’ll like her!” Luke said excitedly.
Amy’s husband, Jeff, was not at home yet, so she assumed that Luna was just a special friend for Luke. Curiosity got the better of her, and she asked Luke if he had a photo of Luna. Luke rushed to his bedroom and returned with a class photo. As Amy looked at the photo, she realized that she had never noticed anyone besides her son before. But Luna’s resemblance to Luke was uncanny. Even her mother-in-law was puzzled by the resemblance.
Amy decided to invite Luna over for a playdate. “Why don’t we invite Luna over?” she suggested to Luke. “If her mom is okay with it, then you two can have a fun day together.”
“Do you think she’ll come? Like really come over?” Luke asked, a mix of excitement and uncertainty in his voice.
Amy smiled reassuringly at her son. “I’ll speak to her mom tomorrow when I drop you off at school.”
When Jeff returned from work that evening, he was exhausted, and they didn’t discuss what had happened during the day. As Jeff went straight to bed after dinner, Amy found herself unable to sleep, consumed by thoughts of Luna and the resemblance she shared with Luke. The morning arrived, and it was time to meet Luna’s mother, Penelope.
Penelope was delighted to meet Amy and eagerly agreed to the playdate. “Luna talks about Luke all the time, Amy,” Penelope said. “This will be a great opportunity for them to spend time together outside of school.”
As the playdate approached, Jeff was at home too. When he saw the freshly baked cookies, he asked, “What’s going on? We’re having people over?”
Amy simply replied, “Yes,” deciding not to discuss the situation further, as suspicion grew in her heart.
The doorbell rang, and Luke eagerly opened the door. Luna rushed towards Jeff as soon as she saw him. Jeff went pale, shocked by the sight of Penelope and Luna.
“Daddy!” Luna exclaimed. “I told you she was my sister!” Luke responded, confirming Luna’s claim. Penelope stood there, her own shock evident on her face.
They let the children play while the adults began to talk, needing to address the situation.
“It was a long time ago, Mary,” Jeff started. “It was just before we found out that you were pregnant with Luke.”
Amy’s world seemed to crumble as she learned about the one-night affair Jeff had years ago. Penelope remained silent, listening to Jeff’s confession.
“So, you knew?” Amy asked, tears welling up in her eyes. “The entire time, you knew?”
“I had to meet her,” Jeff explained. “There was nothing else I could do.”
“I told Jeff to keep it a secret,” Penelope admitted. “I didn’t mind being a single mother to Luna, and my family helped me whenever I needed them.”
Jeff interjected, his voice filled with remorse. “I never meant for any of this to happen.”
Amy couldn’t comprehend why Jeff would put their kids in the same school. “Why would you put the kids in the same school?” she questioned. “Did you really think that their paths were not going to cross?”
Penelope added, “Jeff didn’t know about the school. I enrolled Luna recently. Besides, Jeff only knows the bare minimum about my daughter. It’s what he wanted.”
Feeling overwhelmed and confused, Amy needed some time to think. She excused herself and went outside to check on the kids.
Watching Luna and Luke playing together, Amy realized the trust she had in her husband was shattered. But through Jeff’s pleas and apologies, she agreed to go for couples counseling to work through the situation for the sake of their son.
