Jacob looks at the limb from a bionics firm

Jacob Hyatt, a brave and determined seven-year-old, was born with only one hand. But that hasn’t stopped him from dreaming big. Inspired by his hero Iron Man, Jacob has set his sights on obtaining a high-tech bionic arm. His goal? To ride a bike, swing across monkey bars, and be just like any other kid at the park.

Earlier this year, Jacob had the incredible opportunity to trial a state-of-the-art ‘superhero arm’ designed by Open Bionics. The moment he put it on, he knew he couldn’t go back. His family is now rallying around him, aiming to help him purchase the bionic arm in time for Christmas.

Embracing Uniqueness and Confidence

His mom, Bernice, has always taught Jacob the importance of embracing uniqueness and being confident in who he is. However, she acknowledges that there are certain things Jacob finds challenging. When he wore the bionic arm for the first time, his eyes lit up, and he was determined to have one of his own.

With this in mind, the family is doing everything possible to make Jacob’s dream come true. And they are overwhelmed by the generosity and support they have received so far. Jacob is beyond excited at the thought of becoming a real-life superhero.

A Journey of Determination

Jacob’s mum boosts his self-confidence

Bernice first learned about the bionic arm trial when she saw a Facebook post. Having tried to make life easier for Jacob by buying clothes with zips and Velcro shoes, she knew this arm could be a game-changer. Last August, Jacob tested the groundbreaking £13,000 Open Bionics limb for the first time.

Watching her son control the arm with the sensors attached to his muscles was a moment Bernice will never forget. Jacob effortlessly picked up and dropped tennis balls, flashing his triumphant ‘OK’ hand sign. It was clear to both of them that he needed this arm.

The high-tech arm even comes with a protective shell adorned with the colors and design of Jacob’s favorite superhero, Iron Man. The family has already received over £7000 in donations and hopes to raise the remaining funds in time for Christmas.
