“When I was 18, my dad gifted me a house with two stories. I am extremely thankful for this amazing privilege. It’s not like we’re rich or anything, but my dad bought this house for a cheap price a while ago from a distant relative. The setup is interesting – it’s like an apartment building, but it’s actually a house. Each floor has its own separate entry, kitchen, and bathroom. I live upstairs, and I rent out the downstairs.

My boyfriend (25M) moved in with me about three months ago, and we’ve been together for six months. I haven’t asked him for any money towards rent or utilities. The only thing we split 50/50 is the cost of groceries. I never mentioned that I own the building because I don’t generally share that information unless someone asks directly. I prefer to let people assume I’m just a renter.

We’ve never really talked about the fact that I’m the landlord and have a tenant downstairs. But recently, the tenant came up to inform me that her freezer stopped working. I was downstairs discussing the issue with her, and my boyfriend overheard us. We decided that she would buy a new freezer, send me the receipt, and I would reimburse her. She was very grateful for this solution.

When I went back upstairs, my boyfriend was shocked and asked if the freezer could be fixed. I told him it couldn’t be repaired, but I would cover the costs because I’m her landlord and the freezer was already there when she started renting. He looked at me like I was crazy and started yelling, asking why on earth I would pay for her freezer. I explained my reasoning, but he called me evil for not telling him about being a landlord. He accused me of being someone who only cares about money and treats people like objects. He demanded that I give him 50% of the rent money, or else he’d consider me just as bad as he thought.

I apologize profusely for not telling him earlier, but he hasn’t spoken to me since Tuesday. I’ve tried reaching out, but he won’t respond at all.
