Alan Alda

Beloved actor Alan Alda, best known for his iconic role as Hawkeye Pierce on MASH*, recently shared some unexpected news during an interview. The 82-year-old star disclosed that he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease three years ago.

In a chat on CBS This Morning, Alda discussed his new podcast and opened up about his health journey. Despite the diagnosis, he remains in high spirits, carrying on with his passion for acting, giving talks, and actively supporting initiatives like the Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook.

Surprisingly, Alda hasn’t experienced any noticeable symptoms other than an occasional “thumb twitch.” He revealed that he decided to share his diagnosis personally because he wanted to address it in his own words before the media potentially took a negative spin on the news. “I thought it’s probably only a matter of time before somebody does a story about this from a sad… point of view, which is not where I am,” said Alda.

The clues leading to his diagnosis came from an unusual source – his dreams. Alda recounted a dream where he threw a sack of potatoes at someone, only to realize he had thrown a pillow at his wife. Acting out dreams is sometimes associated with Parkinson’s disease, prompting Alda to seek further medical evaluation.

Parkinson’s disease is a neurological condition that affects movement control by damaging certain cells in the brain. It can cause muscle stiffness, slow movement, and lead to symptoms like tremors, sleep disturbances, and chronic fatigue. While there is no cure for the disease, its progression varies from person to person.

Currently, Alda manages his condition by staying physically active. He takes boxing classes three times a week, plays tennis once a week, and follows a prescribed treatment plan. Emphasizing the importance of taking action after a diagnosis, Alda tweeted, “If you get a diagnosis, keep moving!” He also mentioned that he has no signs of dementia and continues to engage in activities that he enjoys, including juggling.

This news may come as a shock to many fans who have admired Alda’s talent and resilience throughout his extensive career. With over six decades in the entertainment industry, a 61-year marriage to his wife Arlene, and three daughters, Alda is a true example of living life to the fullest despite challenges.
