Escaping the scorching summer heat with a day at the beach seems like the perfect idea, but it’s important to remember that the shore has its own unique dangers. Heather Cassini, a 40-year-old mother from Massachusetts, recently experienced one of these dangers and now wants to warn others about it.

While visiting Hampton Beach in New Hampshire on July 4th with her family, Cassini’s 10-year-old son, Declan, suddenly didn’t feel well. Initially, Cassini didn’t think much of it, attributing it to the heat and Declan’s time spent playing in the ocean. However, things quickly escalated.

Declan became disoriented and collapsed on a sunbather as they were heading back. Even though he managed to stand back up, he stumbled once again and Cassini, who is pregnant, tried to pick him up anxiously. He was going in and out of consciousness and had a pale appearance.

Thankfully, a group of nearby women, some of whom were nurses, came to their aid. They summoned paramedics and provided support to keep Declan conscious and warm. After what felt like an eternity, Declan was able to stand and talk again. They waited for him to feel better and escorted him to the car.

It was later determined that Declan had hypothermia from the cold ocean water, which was only 52 degrees Fahrenheit. Cassini had never considered the possibility of cold shock causing hypothermia on a hot summer day.

Now that Declan has fully recovered, Cassini wants to share her experience to raise awareness about the risks of hypothermia during the summer. She emphasizes that just because someone can handle the water doesn’t mean they are immune to its dangers.

“I had no idea you could get hypothermia even on a hot summer day! This is such an important message to everyone, not just those with children. Please share.”
