About five months ago, Missouri Wildlife shared a Facebook post that left the cyber community puzzled and intrigued. The challenge was to find what lies within the dried foliage. Little did they know, it would go on to become a viral sensation!
The post was captioned “This is why you have to watch every step in the woods,” and it immediately captured the attention of users. Some thought it was an optical illusion, while others marveled at the incredible camouflage on display.
Followers of Missouri Wildlife eagerly commented, asking for help in identifying the mysterious object in the image. One user even shared, “Amazing camo! I still haven’t spotted it, and I usually can.” Intrigued by the response, Missouri Wildlife posted another photo highlighting the slithery snakes, and a user remarked, “Once you see it, you can’t unsee it, but I sure struck out without your marking it!”
So, what was hidden among the brown leaves on the ground, causing such a stir? It was none other than a venomous Copperhead snake – one of the most common snakes in North America.
The Copperhead, a venomous pit viper, has distinctive features like coppery-colored triangular heads and a body covered in pale or pinkish brown skin adorned with several hourglass markings. While Copperheads may not be as dangerous as some snakes, their venom contains hemotoxins that can cause temporary muscle tissue destruction, circulatory system complications, and respiratory problems. Thankfully, Copperhead bites rarely produce enough venom to be fatal, and they usually bite to warn or defend themselves. However, their sharp fangs can still cause damage to the skin tissue.
Interestingly, Copperheads have a unique defense mechanism. Unlike many snakes that slither away when threatened, they freeze and camouflage into their surroundings. It’s an impressive talent, but it can be risky for both humans and animals.
Recently, a dog owner in Fairfax, Virginia, faced a similar situation when they discovered three hidden Copperheads in the grass. They immediately contacted K2C Wildlife Encounters, a wildlife control service specializing in such cases. The skilled team successfully found the elusive snakes, which led them to launch a “spot the snake” challenge on social media. The first picture showed what seemed to be lush green grass, prompting one user to comment, “Need to draw a red hat on it, so we can do a Where’s Waldo.” Little did they know what awaited them in the next image – a red bucket holding three Copperhead snakes. In their Facebook post, K2C Wildlife Encounters jokingly mentioned, “Look what happens when you have Copperheads in leaves! Magic, they disappear!”
Just like in this Facebook challenge, snakes are often demonized in the media, spreading unnecessary fear. Bonnie Keller, cofounder of K2C Wildlife Encounters, emphasizes that snakes are much less likely to cause harm than common pets like dogs, horses, cats, or even rabbits. She encourages people living in areas with snakes to educate themselves about the local snake species, their appearance, and where they are most likely to be found. After all, knowledge is power.
