Fueled by his enduring reputation as a performer and advocate for animals, this legendary figure continues to thrive at the age of 99.

In 1972, a lot happened. Don McLean’s hit song “American Pie” was at No. 1, Richard Nixon was president, and NASA’s Space Shuttle program was officially launched. But there was another significant event that year – the debut of a new game show called “The Price is Right,” hosted by the one and only Bob Barker. Bob Barker in younger years

Bob Barker, now a multigenerational household name, hosted the iconic game show for an impressive 35 years. Today, he is celebrating a century of life and continues to inspire us all. Let’s take a closer look at his incredible journey.

A Legend in the Making

Born and raised on an Indian reservation in South Dakota, Barker’s path to fame was anything but ordinary. He met his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Jo Gideon, during an Ella Fitzgerald concert. They married in 1945, and although Barker trained as a fighter pilot during World War II, he ultimately chose a different path, earning a degree in economics.

From Radio to Television

Barker’s radio career in Los Angeles caught the attention of Ralph Edwards, a game show producer in search of a new host for “Truth or Consequences.” His reputation continued to grow as he hosted this popular show from 1956 to 1975. In 1972, Barker made a guest appearance on “The Price is Right” and instantly became part of its success story. Bob Barker hosting "The Price is Right"

“The Price is Right” went on to become the longest-running game show in history, a record it still holds today. Barker’s talent and charisma as a host earned him a staggering 14 Daytime Emmy Awards and four Emmys as an executive producer in 1988.

Love and Loss

Behind every successful man is a great woman. Barker credits his late wife, Dorothy Jo Gideon, for his remarkable career. In an interview, he expressed, “She gave me the confidence to even try to do what I set out to do. She didn’t just urge me on, she worked right at my side.” Sadly, Dorothy Jo passed away in 1981 after a battle with lung cancer.

After her passing, Barker found love again with Nancy Burnet. Nancy has been by his side for the past 40 years and has played a significant role in his well-being. At almost 99 years old, Barker takes only one prescription medication, proving that good health can be achieved with the right lifestyle choices. Bob Barker and Nancy Burnet

Overcoming Challenges

Though Bob Barker has enjoyed a remarkable life, it hasn’t been without its challenges. He underwent surgery in 1999 to repair a blocked artery and underwent prostate surgery following a stroke in 2002. Additionally, he has faced moderate skin cancer, serious back problems, and a series of falls that required hospital trips.

But true to his resilient spirit, Barker has always bounced back. With the support of Nancy, he made dietary changes and incorporated vitamins to regain strength. His vegetarian lifestyle, which he and Dorothy Jo adopted together, has been a key factor in his overall health and well-being.

Legacy and Beyond

After departing from “The Price is Right,” Bob Barker made occasional appearances, including a memorable one on his 90th birthday. He never grew tired of the show that made him a household name. Barker fondly looks back on the incredible memories, like having Vanna White as a contestant before her “Wheel of Fortune” fame, and the undeniable excitement of female contestants on the show. Yet, one of the most significant aspects of his time on the show was his platform to raise awareness about animal welfare. Bob Barker with a cute dog

Barker has been a passionate advocate for animal rights, and his famous sign-off at the end of every show, “This is Bob Barker reminding you to help control the pet population. Have your pets spayed or neutered,” has left a lasting impact. In memory of his late wife and mother, Barker founded the DJ&T Foundation, which has contributed millions of dollars towards promoting animal rights education at prestigious law schools.

Now, as Bob Barker celebrates a century of life, we are truly fortunate to have someone like him – a powerful role model who uses his influence to protect and save innocent creatures.
