David Flucker, a remarkable 100-year-old man, celebrated his birthday on June 22nd with no intentions of slowing down. The very next day, he was back at work, continuing his dedicated service at St Columba’s Hospice shop. Despite a grueling two-hour commute each way, David remains committed to his role as a volunteer.

Rain or shine, David makes his way to the shop, enduring two bus rides and a 20-minute walk. His passion for helping others and his affinity for sorting through donations has not only enriched the lives of those he serves but has also been an essential part of his own journey.

After losing his wife in 2010, David found solace and purpose in his volunteer work. When he was diagnosed with cancer, the tasks at the charity shop provided him with a sense of fulfillment and distraction from his own health challenges. Though he doesn’t work the cash register, David thrives in his public-facing role, valuing the opportunity to interact with people and enjoy the social aspect of his work.

“It is a wonderful feeling to be doing something,” David shares. He dedicates three days a week to his work – Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays – which are the busiest days at the shop. From meticulously inspecting donated clothes to checking toys, books, and jigsaw puzzles, David ensures everything is in good condition. And sometimes, people visit the shop simply to have a friendly chat with him.

When he’s not volunteering, David indulges in his hobbies, tending to his garden and building model railways. These model railways are not just for his personal enjoyment; David auctions them off to raise funds for St Columba’s Hospice, giving back even when he’s not at the shop.

Retiring at the age of 72 after a career as a printer, David demonstrates that age is no barrier to enjoying life to the fullest. On his birthday, he was treated to a boat tour of the Firth of Forth and received a special card from the Queen. The celebration was a memorable one, filled with surprises and the love and appreciation of friends and colleagues. And of course, he delighted in a marvelous birthday cake adorned with raspberries.

David Flucker is an inspiration to us all. His unwavering dedication and vibrant spirit exemplify the impact one person can have on the lives of many. We can all learn from his commitment to helping others and his zest for life.
