When the Springdale School District celebrated the Class of 2022, they not only recognized the achievements of the current students but also honored four special individuals. These four individuals, Carl Stults, Bobby Burke, Charles Leroy Moon, and Bob Self, would have graduated in 1956 if they hadn’t made the courageous decision to serve in the military.

Known as the “super seniors,” these veteran heroes were finally awarded honorary diplomas alongside the 484 graduating seniors of Springdale High School. It was a heartwarming moment that highlighted the dedication and sacrifice of these brave individuals.

In 1956, these men were seniors at Springdale High, but none of them received a diploma from the school. Self explains, “I took a GED test when I went into the Air Force, and at the time, Springdale didn’t recognize the GED test. I got a diploma from Little Rock Central.” It was only recently that the school district discovered their oversight while having lunch with the veterans.

The surprise inclusion of these “super seniors” during the graduation ceremony was a powerful lesson for the graduating class. Springdale Superintendent Jared Cleveland read heartfelt letters from Governor Asa Hutchinson and U.S. Representative Steve Womack, extolling the selflessness and true spirit of America displayed by these veterans.

These four men valiantly served during the time of the Korean conflict and beyond. They didn’t think about themselves; they answered the call of duty, exemplifying the noblest values of our nation. Educators took the opportunity to highlight each veteran’s accomplishments since joining the Air Force in 1956.

After 66 long years, these four veterans finally received their well-deserved diplomas from their alma mater, Springdale High School. It serves as a reminder that their contributions to our country should never be forgotten or overlooked.

Congratulations to Carl Stults, Bobby Burke, Charles Leroy Moon, and Bob Self on this incredible achievement! We wholeheartedly thank you for your service and sacrifices. It is because of heroes like you that we are able to enjoy the freedoms and opportunities that we have today. Please join us in sharing this heartwarming story and congratulating these remarkable men for their accomplishments!
