Can you imagine being born in a prison and still managing to earn a place at one of the most prestigious universities in the world? Meet Sky Castner, an extraordinary 18-year-old girl who has defied all odds to gain admission to Harvard University.
Sky’s story began in the Galveston County Jail, where she was born. However, since her father picked her up and became her single parent, her incarcerated mother has played no significant role in her life. Despite the challenges of frequent relocations during her youth, Sky never wavered in her determination to attend Harvard. And now, her dream has become a reality.
Last week, Sky received third place in her class at Conroe High School, which paved the way for her acceptance into Harvard. An aspiring law student, Sky has faced numerous obstacles along the way but has always stayed focused on her goals.
In her application letter to Harvard, Sky began with a powerful sentence: “I was born in prison.” This bold statement captures the essence of her journey and highlights her resilience.
Even as a young child, Sky showed immense academic potential. Teachers at Reaves Elementary recognized her thirst for knowledge and recommended additional mentoring to help her reach her full potential. That’s when Mona Hamby, from CISD’s Project Mentor, stepped in.
Mona and Sky formed a unique bond, both having dealt with absent mothers in their lives. Together, they embarked on a journey of growth and learning. Mona provided guidance on various aspects of Sky’s life, from choosing glasses to getting her first haircut at a salon. Through their interactions, Sky gained valuable life lessons and experiences that shaped her character.
In 2022, Sky had the opportunity to visit the Harvard campus with Mona and her husband. This visit further fueled her desire to study at this renowned institution. Seeking guidance on her application, Sky approached Professor James Wallace from Boston University, who helped her craft her unique story in the most compelling way.
Sky’s journey is nothing short of inspiring. She defied all expectations and proved that one’s past does not define their future. Her determination and perseverance are remarkable, and we couldn’t be happier for her.
