Are you planning to do more travelling in the new year? Well, get ready for some major changes coming your way in 2024. From updates to the 100ml liquid rule to tourist taxes and border controls, airports will be implementing the biggest shake-up of security in decades. So, let’s dive into all the exciting details!

All the major new travel rules coming in 2024 including 100ml liquid changes

100ml Liquid Rules for Hand Luggage

Say goodbye to squeezing your suncream into tiny bottles or paying a fortune for mini-sized toiletries. By June 2024, airports in the UK will install new security technology that will finally put an end to the 100ml liquid rule. Passengers will soon be able to take up to two litres of liquids in their hand luggage, thanks to the new security scanners.

Transport Secretary Mark Harper says, “I’m streamlining cabin bag rules at airports while enhancing security. Major airports across the UK will have the latest security tech installed by 2024, improving the passenger experience and detecting potential threats.”

Children as young as 10 can use e-Gates at the airport.

Please note that this change applies only to UK airports. So, if you’re travelling abroad, the old rules about liquids may still apply.

Children and e-Gates

Travelling with children can be stressful, but here’s some good news. Since July of this year, children as young as 10 can use e-Gates at 13 UK airports, including popular ones like Heathrow and Gatwick. This means faster and less stressful travel for families.

Previously, children had to be 12 to use e-Gates. These gates are also used at UK border controls in Brussels and Paris.

Passport Rules

Before you board a plane, make sure your UK passport is less than 10 years old on the day of travel and has at least three months remaining after your return. These requirements have been in place for a while, but many passengers still have their travel disrupted due to not adhering to the rules. So, keep an eye on your passport’s expiration date to avoid any last-minute surprises.

10 popular holiday destinations will increase their tourist taxes next year.

Tourist Taxes

If you’re planning to visit popular holiday destinations next year, be prepared for increased tourist taxes. For example, Venice will charge a €5 entrance fee for visitors just for the day. Amsterdam’s hotel room tax rate will go up to 12.5%, and Paris will have a charge almost 200% higher than the current price. Valencia will charge tourists a fee ranging from €0.50 to €2 per night.

New EU Border Controls

By Autumn 2024, a new system called the entry/exit system (EES) will be implemented for non-EU citizens travelling into EU countries. This digital process will require registering personal details like names, travel documents, fingerprints/captured facial images, and dates and places of entry and exit.

There will be new EU border controls.

Visas

Visa requirements are also changing. Many countries have been easing visa requirements to boost tourism. Kosovo will have a visa-free regime starting in January. Iran, Russia, and Israel are making changes as well. Furthermore, the ongoing trend of digitalisation of visas will kick off in the Schengen Area. An automated IT system called the Entry/Exit System (EES) will be introduced in October 2022, and an electronic visa system known as EU Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is expected to launch in early 2025, charging €7 for most non-EU citizens travelling to the bloc.

Restricted Airspace

Due to conflicts, some airspaces have become “no-fly zones.” For instance, most European countries have banned direct flights to Russia following the Ukraine conflict. As a result, airlines have to take alternative routes or face limited availability, which can drive up ticket prices.

Paris Olympics

If you’re planning a romantic trip to Paris, you might want to consider the Paris Olympics. As next year’s Summer Olympics will be hosted in the city, your travel plans might be affected by this major event.

In conclusion, 2024 will bring significant changes to travel rules across different areas. Stay informed and plan ahead for a smoother and more enjoyable travel experience. Happy travels!
