We often hear about individuals who go missing in the wilderness, and unfortunately, it usually ends in tragedy. However, we have some good news to share about a recent incident in California that ended on a positive note.

Lukas McClish

Meet Lukas McClish, a 34-year-old hiker who embarked on a three-hour walk through the Big Basin Redwoods State Park in Boulder Creek. Little did he know that he would go missing and remain lost in the remote California mountains for a total of 10 days.

But here’s the extraordinary part — Lukas was not only found, but he also managed to survive the challenging conditions of the wilderness for that extended period of time. Now, he’s sharing his story of resilience and survival.

Lukas, an experienced hiker, went to explore some granite outcroppings in the area without informing anyone of his plans. He expected to be back within a few hours and didn’t even pack a shirt. However, his trip took a disastrous turn when he got lost and couldn’t find his way back.

It took five days for Lukas’ family to realize he was missing. They became worried when he didn’t show up for a Father’s Day lunch. Finally, they reported him missing, and the search for Lukas began.

Despite not having many supplies with him, Lukas relied on his survival skills to endure the wilderness. He drank water from the creek by using his boot and survived on wild berries. But as the days went by, his body craved sustenance, and he lost about 30 pounds during his time in the wild. He also encountered a mountain lion and suffered from hypothermia after slipping and falling while climbing a rock face.

Desperate to be found, Lukas resorted to shouting for help for two consecutive days until someone heard him. It took a team of 300 Rangers, along with sniffer dogs and drones, to locate him. Once found, Lukas was taken to the hospital for a night, and then joyfully reunited with his family.

Reflecting on his experience, Lukas realized that the area where he got lost had been devastated by a wildfire in 2020. The landscape had drastically changed, making it difficult for him to navigate using his usual methods. However, his regular backpacking trips and survival skills played a vital role in helping him survive.

Despite enduring such a harrowing situation, Lukas remains undeterred. He expresses a desire to continue hiking, although he feels that he has had enough hiking adventures for the rest of the year.

Lukas’ mother, Diane, shares her relief at having her son back safe and sound. She recalls the moments of worry, unable to sleep at night, not knowing where he was, how cold he might be, and whether he was still alive. She put her trust in God and clung to hope throughout the ordeal.

Lukas’ incredible survival story serves as a testament to human resilience and the power of the human spirit. His determination and courage in the face of adversity are truly remarkable.
