While we are all bound to encounter bugs in our homes at certain times of the year, there are certain creepy crawlies that most of us can live without. If you happen to live in a rural area, you are probably well accustomed to flies, ants, spiders, and other insects trying to take up residence in your home, especially during the summer months.

Some people are not bothered by the yearly bug invasion, while others are less tolerant of the idea. Personally, I can live with spiders building their webs in the corners and the occasional fly buzzing around the kitchen. However, I take exception to earwigs…

You have likely seen an earwig in your home at some point, even if you didn’t recognize it. These little insects are not exactly cute, and although they might look like they could deliver a nasty sting or bite, they are actually harmless.

However, most people do not want a horde of earwigs crawling around their homes. That’s why I found a particular hack for dealing with them incredibly useful.

User Alicia Alexander shared a tried and tested method to get rid of an earwig problem. According to Alicia, filling a shallow bowl with half a cup of olive oil and placing it in your backyard or on your deck is the perfect way to trap earwigs.

The picture below reportedly shows how many earwigs Alicia managed to catch in less than 24 hours:

And here’s the same bowl after 36 hours:

Earwigs are apparently attracted to the sweetness of the olive oil, but once they climb into the bowl, they can’t get out. So if you’re dealing with an earwig infestation, this could be the ideal solution!

Now, don’t panic, but the presence of an unusual number of earwigs in your home could indicate problems with rotting wood. Earwigs are among the many insects that are attracted to wood rot, so be sure to check any wooden structures you have at home.

However, if earwigs are seeking warmer conditions inside your house, there’s nothing to be alarmed about. It’s completely normal, and their presence is highly unlikely to affect you in any way.
