His wife, Angela, confirmed that he peacefully passed away on May 11, 2023, at the New York-Presbyterian Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Barry Newman, originally from Boston, Massachusetts, was best known for his iconic role as Kowalski in the beloved 1971 crime thriller film, Vanishing Point.

Barry Newman graced both the stage and the silver screen with his talent. He captivated audiences on Broadway and left a lasting impression in the 1970 movie The Lawyer. However, it was his role in Vanishing Point that truly defined his career. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Newman spoke fondly of the experience, “This was very unique. The guy was the rebel, the antihero. I enjoyed doing that very much.”

While Vanishing Point may have been his most celebrated work, Barry Newman also portrayed defense lawyer Anthony Petrocelli in the popular 1970 movie The Lawyer. His acting journey began in 1957 with the Herman Wouk play Nature’s Way. Throughout his career, he continued to shine in movies like the 1975 film The Take and made memorable appearances on hit TV shows such as Law & Order and NYPD Blue.

Beyond his acting prowess, Barry Newman was a remarkable humanitarian and philanthropist. He dedicated his time and resources to help those less fortunate than himself. Angela, his loving wife, expressed her admiration for his commitment to others, stating, “He was a man of great integrity and compassion who devoted his life to helping the less fortunate. He made an impact on many lives through his generous donations and volunteer work, and I know he will be deeply missed.”

Barry Newman leaves behind his wife Angela and their two children, Aidan and Talia. He will be remembered not only for his remarkable performances but also for his compassion and generosity. His legacy will forever live on in the hearts of all those he touched throughout his life’s work.

Born on November 7, 1930, in Boston, Barry Newman pursued his education at Boston Latin School and Brandeis University. In 2009, he faced vocal-cord cancer but successfully recovered and continued working in the industry well into his nineties. His final role was in the 2022 independent movie Finding Hannah.
