Country artist Jason Aldean has recently faced criticism and controversy surrounding his new song and music video. Considered racist and pro-lynching by some, the song titled “Try That in a Small Town” has sparked a heated debate. Aldean has finally decided to address the accusations and speak out.
After allegations of racism and promoting lynching, CMT made the decision to remove the music video for Aldean’s song “Try That in a Small Town.” Despite the backlash, Aldean is not backing down and wants to share his side of the story.
Aldean took to social media to defend himself against the accusations. He clarified, “I have recently been accused of publishing a pro-lynching song (a song that has been out since May) and was subject to the comparison that I (direct quote) was not too pleased with the statewide BLM rallies.” Aldean emphasized that these references hold no value and are dangerous.
CMT removed the music video from airplay after only three days, but they have yet to provide any explanation for their decision. This lack of transparency has left many wondering about the motivations behind the removal.
The controversial music video was shot in front of the Maury County Courthouse in Columbia, Tennessee. This location holds historical significance as it was the site of the lynching of an African-American man named Henry Choate in the 1920s. While not explicitly stated in the video, the imagery of protesters, clashes with law enforcement, and burning American flags has intensified the controversy.
Aldean defends his song, explaining that it captures the sense of community he experienced while growing up in a small town. He emphasizes that the lyrics do not reference race and that all video clips used are authentic news footage. Despite differing political views, Aldean believes in coming together for a sense of normalcy.
It’s important to note that this is not the first time Aldean has faced criticism. In 2021, his wife, Brittany Aldean, made transphobic remarks which led to the musician’s public relations company severing ties with him. Aldean has also faced backlash for his response to his wife’s comments.
Adding to the challenges he currently faces, Aldean has recently dealt with health issues. He was hospitalized for heatstroke on the second day of his Highway Desperado tour, resulting in a delay in his upcoming concerts. Fans have been reassured that the show will be rescheduled.
