The WWE star decided to strip completely naked for the skit, which was performed alongside host Jimmy Kimmel. The moment occurred as Cena was about to present the Best Costume Design award, and the nominees for the award were Poor Things, Oppenheimer, Barbie, Napoleon, and Killers of the Flower Moon.
Jimmy Kimmel playfully asked the audience, “Can you imagine if a nude man ran across the stage today? Wouldn’t that be crazy?” referencing a previous incident at the 1974 Academy Awards where a streaker ran across the stage. Building on Kimmel’s joke, Cena peeked around the curtain and humorously stated that he changed his mind about doing the streaker bit. He didn’t want to go forward with the idea, as he wanted the event to maintain its elegance. Cena even expressed that suggesting such a tasteless joke should make people feel shame.
But Cena didn’t let the opportunity for laughter pass him by. In the end, he did step out onto the stage to present the award for Best Costume Design to the winner, Poor Things. His modesty, or lack thereof, seemed to be protected only by the envelope containing the winning nomination. Shortly after the skit, a social media post revealed that Cena was actually wearing skin-painted underwear behind the envelope, which added another layer of hilarity to the performance.
People on social media had different reactions to Cena’s ‘naked’ appearance. Some praised the effective makeup job on the skin-painted underwear, while others wished Cena had gone all out and embraced the joke fully. Regardless, Cena’s moment on the Oscars stage definitely caused a stir and provided plenty to talk about both online and offline.
Even though Cena wasn’t nominated for an Oscar this year, he did have a small role in the movie Barbie. Interestingly, the 46-year-old recently shared how he had been advised not to take the role before the movie’s successful release. According to Cena, the agency representing him was concerned that the movie might not align with his image as a WWE star. However, Cena made it clear that he’s not just a commodity, but a human being who embraces every opportunity that comes his way.
