In his book, Fox describes Gus as his “wonder dog” – a faithful companion who always knew how to bring a smile to people’s faces. Gus provided invaluable support to Fox during his battle with Parkinson’s disease, a fight that has been in the spotlight for decades.
“I didn’t rescue Gus. You can argue that he rescued me, but he’d be too modest to make that claim,” Fox wrote. This statement highlights the immense value Gus brought to Fox’s life and how deeply he will be missed as an integral member of the family.
In a recent interview, Fox emphasized the significant role Gus played during his health struggles. He expressed that Gus’s constant affection prevented him from feeling isolated while fighting Parkinson’s disease, which he has bravely shared with the public for over twenty years.
“No matter your situation, no matter what you feel, this animal is with you and is connected to you. And you feel. It’s a force multiplier,” Fox shared. He acknowledged the tendency for individuals with chronic illnesses to isolate themselves and shrink their world. However, Gus had the power to open up Fox’s world and provide comfort and companionship.
Gus also played a vital role in Fox’s recovery after a 2018 surgery to remove a tumor from his spinal cord. Initially requiring a wheelchair, Fox relied on Gus to help him regain his ability to walk. The loyal dog circled the wheelchair, emitting low woofs, before sitting directly in front of Fox. In that moment, Gus seemed to understand and reassure Fox, providing the strength and encouragement he needed.
