Yesterday, the basketball world received the sad news that Jerry West, the man on the NBA logo, had passed away at the age of 86. Michael Jordan, considered one of the greatest basketball players of all time, paid tribute to him on the show “First Take.”

In a heartfelt text message to Stephen A. Smith during the live broadcast, Jordan expressed his deep sadness and shared his thoughts on the legendary player. Smith, relaying Jordan’s words, said, “I am so deeply saddened by the news of Jerry’s death. He was a real friend and teacher to me, like a big brother. I valued our friendship and what he knew. I always wished I could have played against him, but as I got to know him better, I wished I had been on his team. He will be missed always. My condolences to his son and wife Karen.”

The tribute from Jordan touched the hearts of fans worldwide. Many took to social media to express their admiration for both Jordan and West. One fan remarked, “Wow, that’s really nice of MJ.” Another fan called West the “GOAT GM,” referring to his successful career as a general manager. A third fan simply wrote, “He will be missed.” West’s legacy as a player and his contributions to the sport were truly appreciated by basketball enthusiasts.

Stephen A. Smith, who also shared his memories of West, recalled a time when he suggested that Jordan should replace West as the NBA logo. To his surprise, West agreed with the idea and called Smith to express his support. Smith said, “He called because he thought I sounded like I would dismiss it. And he was telling me, ‘No way!’ I believe Michael Jordan is the best. I think it’s fair for him.”

Jerry West was not only a legendary player but also instrumental in building the Los Angeles Lakers’ dynasty in the 1980s. His basketball insights and contributions to the sport will be remembered forever. West was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2019 and a statue by the Lakers in 2010. His impact on the game and his kindness as a person will be greatly missed.

Rest in peace, Jerry “The Logo” West.
