Residents of Ocean Grove, New Jersey, are up in arms after a Christian special interest group constructed a pier on the public beach in the shape of a Christian cross. This move has sparked outrage among many locals, who feel that they are being forced into unwanted Christian worship.

The Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association, the group responsible for building the cross-shaped pier, has defended their decision, stating that they have no apologies for their love of the cross-like design. However, the association’s stance has done little to quell the public outcry.

Following the destruction of the original pier during Hurricane Sandy in 2012, the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association saw an opportunity to rebuild the structure in a way that aligned with their religious convictions. The privately funded pier was constructed to resurrect their Christian ideals and make them accessible to the public.

Critics argue that the $1.3 million, 500-foot long cross-shaped pier is a form of “Christian bullying.” Concerned individuals have called on state and local officials to intervene before construction is completed. The opening of the pier, currently scheduled for December 7, 2022, may face delays if those opposing the Christian symbolism are successful in utilizing their government power to impede progress.

Presbyterian Pastor Douglas Grote has voiced his concerns about the pier, referring to it as a “pathetic example of Christian bullying.” In a guest column for NJ.com, Pastor Grote expressed the fear that this divisive symbol could become a Trojan horse for Ocean Grove, Asbury Park, and the state of New Jersey as a whole.

To address these concerns, Pastor Grote plans to take a stand against the pier during the next Ocean Grove Home Owners Association meeting on September 24, 2022. He intends to propose a vote to halt the construction until a thorough investigation is conducted, and the community’s wishes are taken into account. This would align with the principles of democracy and ensure that all citizens have a say in the matter.

The controversy surrounding the cross-shaped pier highlights the delicate balance between religious expression and the separation of church and state. As the debate continues, residents eagerly await a resolution that respects everyone’s rights and values.
