Today, we remember Princess Diana on what would have been her 63rd birthday. It’s hard to believe that it has been 27 years since we lost her in a tragic car crash. As the world commemorates her untimely passing, let’s revisit the chilling words she uttered before slipping into a coma that would ultimately lead to her death.

In August 1997, the “People’s Princess” was traveling through a tunnel in Paris with her rumored boyfriend, Dodi Fayed, after attending an exclusive dinner. Diana’s driver, Henri Paul, and Dodi’s bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones, were also in the car. As they drove through the Pont de l’Alma underpass, they were chased by a pack of press and paparazzi.

Tragedy struck when the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to collide with a column inside the tunnel. Unfortunately, both the driver and Dodi were killed instantly. Diana and her bodyguard were severely injured and rushed to the hospital.

During the chaotic emergency journey, a French firefighter named Xavier Gourmelon attended the scene and had a brief interaction with Princess Diana. Unaware that these would be her final words, he recounted that she asked, “Oh my god, what’s happened?” as she regained consciousness in the back of the car. The princess appeared agitated briefly before losing consciousness again.

Xavier tried to offer comfort, promising they would take care of her, but she fell into a coma once more. Tragically, her health rapidly deteriorated when she was being removed from the car. She went into cardiac arrest, and despite resuscitation attempts by the doctors at Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris, she passed away early the next morning.

The world mourned the loss of Princess Diana, a compassionate and beloved figure. Her untimely death left a void in the hearts of billions of adoring fans. Today, as we remember her on what would have been her 63rd birthday, let us honor her memory and the legacy she left behind.
