Random incidents of violence have unfortunately become more common in recent years, leaving us all concerned about the state of our communities. The economic hardships brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with the aftermath of the financial collapse, have left many Americans struggling to make ends meet. It’s no wonder that rage and frustration are running high, but what drives some individuals to resort to violence?
In a shocking incident in Baltimore, Maryland, a group of young individuals targeted a 64-year-old man in a random attack. What makes this even more disturbing is that they live-streamed the entire abuse on Facebook, using the social media platform to showcase their act of violence.
The Baltimore Sun reports that three males and one female approached the elderly gentleman while he peacefully read a book on a park bench near Wyman Park Dell. They struck up a seemingly innocent conversation before abruptly threatening the man with a gun and demanding his money and belongings.
To make matters worse, the attack escalated quickly as one of the assailants drew a knife and stabbed the victim, while another sprayed mace, causing further harm. All the while, the perpetrators streamed the entire event live on Facebook, aiming to gain attention and admiration from their friends and followers.
It is both fortunate and commendable that the police were able to track down the attackers through the recorded live stream. After apprehending 18-year-old Zannay Laws, who confessed her involvement, authorities were able to identify and apprehend additional suspects. Justice will be served for the elderly man who simply sought solace in his book while sitting on a park bench.
City Councilwoman Mary Pat Clarke expressed her outrage at the incident, stating, “Here’s a man sitting on a bench, reading a book in the park. To think that it was actually planned and recorded to be publicized is just beyond understanding. It’s outrageous.” Councilwoman Clarke went on to question what could motivate someone to participate in such a heinous assault and then boldly share it with others. Indeed, the entire ordeal is sickening.
Laws, along with suspect Dakei Perry, both 18 years old, now face serious charges, including attempted first-degree murder, assault, armed robbery, theft, and other related offenses. If convicted, they may very well find themselves serving a significant sentence behind bars. It is worth noting that this group is also believed to be responsible for other robberies in the Baltimore area.
As incidents like this continue to shake our communities, it is crucial that we come together to address the underlying issues causing such senseless acts. Our fellow citizens should feel safe and protected, especially the elderly, who deserve our utmost respect and care. Random acts of violence should never be tolerated, and we must work to ensure a brighter and safer future for all.
