Robert Pattinson Slept on an Inflatable Boat for Six Months Because He Didn’t Have Furniture

In the realm of Hollywood heartthrobs, Robert Pattinson has donned many hats— from Twilight superstar to the boyfriend of Suki Waterhouse. But now, he can add furniture designer to his impressive résumé. In an interview with Architectural Digest, the actor opens up about his newfound passion and reflects on a time in his life when he had no furniture at all.

Pattinson candidly recalls a period during his early acting days when an inflatable boat served as his makeshift couch, bed, and dining table. Humorously, he jokingly admits, “I loved it very much, but it caused a lot of back problems.” Despite the unconventional arrangement, he made the best of his situation.

Now, designing furniture has become one of Pattinson’s passions. He takes the magazine through his creative process, sharing his journey in creating a unique nine-foot-long sofa that now graces his home, which he shares with his partner, Suki Waterhouse. Pattinson explains, “I started sketching pieces of furniture that would inspire playful and informal interactions. They all had oversized elements that added a touch of fun. And as I experimented with clay models, I discovered the magic of organic, overlapping curves.”

The actor reveals that he dedicated his free time after wrapping up filming for The Batman to sketching his design. To refine his vision, he sought the assistance of designer Nicole Gordon, with whom he had previously collaborated on two of his homes. Pattinson’s creation is now showcased at JF Chen, a furniture store in Los Angeles. Additionally, six more made-to-order pieces are available for purchase, and he is currently working on designing a matching table and chairs.

While Suki Waterhouse has kept mum about her partner’s foray into interior design, she did discuss living with him during a guest appearance on the Apple podcast Driven Minds. Explaining her anxiety about the move, she shares, “I wasn’t there for the move, so everything just got boxed up and sent.” To ease the overwhelming task, Waterhouse enlisted the help of a professional cleaner to sort through her “collection of mess.”

Waterhouse, who had grown accustomed to living alone prior to the move, adds, “It doesn’t feel like that crazy of a thing. And I’m very lucky because he is so accepting of the mess and chaos. He never says anything about it. He kind of thinks it’s charming. So, I’m very lucky for that.”

Robert Pattinson’s story is a testament to resilience and embracing creativity in unexpected ways. From an inflatable boat serving as furniture to designing his own pieces, Pattinson reminds us that our surroundings can influence our passions, and sometimes, even our career paths. Perhaps, like Pattinson, we too can find inspiration in the extraordinary within the ordinary.
