The photo of Jessica Simpson reveals a startling transformation. Her face is swollen, and she appears lost and disconnected. Dressed in a pink warm-up tracksuit, she sits alone in a dimly lit room. It’s unclear whether drugs or alcohol were behind her appearance in the photo, but Simpson admits that she was in the midst of her battle with addiction when it was taken.

“I can barely recognize the person in this photo from the morning of November 1, 2017,” Simpson confesses. As she promotes her new memoir, Open Book, she opens up about the challenges she faced and the incredible journey she embarked on to conquer her addiction.

“In that moment, I knew I had to find myself again. I had to regain my light, conquer the internal battle for self-respect, and face the world with newfound clarity.”

Alcohol kept Simpson trapped in a vicious cycle. She’d drink until she was intoxicated and then fall into a restless sleep. When she woke up, she’d repeat the same destructive pattern. Day after day, she found herself stuck in this life-draining routine, knowing that if she didn’t break free from her addiction, it would eventually claim her life.

“I was beyond exhausted,” Simpson admits, reflecting on those dark times.

However, Simpson had mistakenly believed that her pain was to be embraced, a badge of honor. In reality, it was tearing her family apart. But something finally clicked within her. She realized that she had to make a change. It was up to her to break free from the cycle and “move forward without regret or remorse for any past choices I had made or would make in the future.”

Four years ago, Jessica Simpson made the incredible decision to stop drinking. And now, looking back, she can hardly believe how far she’s come.

“Sometimes it feels like only two years. And honestly, I think that’s a good thing. Ha!”

Overcoming her addiction wasn’t just about battling the substance itself; Simpson also had to confront the stigma surrounding addiction. She knew that she would be labeled as an alcoholic and an addict, and she had to come to terms with what those labels meant for her.

“I had to learn to embrace my failures, pain, brokenness, and self-destructive patterns,” she reveals. “It wasn’t just about the drinking. It was about me. I didn’t love myself or recognize my own strength. But today, I do.”

Now happily married to her husband, Eric Johnson, Jessica Simpson cherishes her family and the life they’ve built together. They share the joy of raising their children, including nine-year-old Maxwell, eight-year-old Ace, and two-year-old Birdie.

Jessica’s story is a powerful reminder that no matter how challenging life becomes, it is never too late to overcome addiction, embrace self-love, and find the strength to build a brighter future.
