South Carolina police find body of Massachusetts man who vanished from Hilton Head family vacation

Stanley Kotowski disappeared during Hilton Head trip

Missing Massachusetts man seen leaving South Carolina beach rental in Ring video before disappearance

When you think a family vacation couldn’t possibly get more dramatic, think again. Stanley Kotowski, a 60-year-old Massachusetts man, took what can only be described as an unnerving detour from his Hilton Head vacation. He was last seen leaving his beach rental barefoot, showing all the signs of someone who might misplace a sock, but certainly not himself.

South Carolina police declared on a rainy Monday that they believe they’ve found Stan under a residence in the oh-so-lovely Sea Pines area of Hilton Head. A location more suited to spare furniture than missing humans.

Ring video footage brilliantly managed to capture Kotowski in his Coors Light shirt, causing one to wonder if he was hunting for a cold one. He seemed confused as he… ahem, ‘left the building’ on August 16, prompting an involuntary game of hide and seek with the local residents.

The Ring doorbell footage swept across social media like a wind hurricane through a beach town. Desperate times called for viral measures, right?

By August 26, things had escalated. Authorities alert us that, lo and behold, the body they suspect to be Stan’s was carefully extracted from underneath a residence and dutifully sent for autopsy.

“Hold onto your sun hats,” said the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office in a Facebook post filled with drama. Sure enough, their quest for Stan involved digging around Sea Pines, a place teeming with secrets, or at least, a couple of misplaced residents.

Efforts to locate Stan turned into a community saga involving regular folks checking their Ring cameras for random men in beer shirts. The Sheriff’s Office plied the good people of Hilton Head with requests for any insights into the wandering man’s whereabouts.

“Over the last month, he’s been struggling with severe insomnia and an increasing feeling that someone—apparently everyone—was out to get him,” shared his wife, Jackie, via Facebook. Her post painted a picture of escalating paranoia.

Indeed, Stanley became convinced he was being pursued, though perhaps he was not prepared for the reality that unfolded.

The sheriff’s department reassured the Kotowski family, affirming their relentless efforts to corral Stanley back to safety through both land and water searches. An operation that might have qualified for a spin-off in some reality TV show.

Amid this tragic turn of events, it’s a stern reminder of life’s unpredictability. The vigilant Hilton Head community and the fiery persistence of the local police embody a classic detective saga, minus the film noir soundtrack.
