The captivating phenomenon of a solar eclipse is set to occur on April 8. However, recent studies have raised concerns about the potential driving risks that eclipses can pose. Insights from the 2017 total solar eclipse revealed a disturbing increase in fatal car accidents during similar astronomical events.
Researchers from the Universities of British Columbia and Toronto conducted an analysis, which suggests that the approaching eclipse may lead to a significant rise in traffic fatalities.
The Total Eclipse Study
Dr. Donald Redelmeier, a professor at the University of Toronto and one of the study’s authors, highlighted various factors that contribute to these increased risks. These factors include heightened traffic, unfamiliar routes, speeding to arrive on time, driver distraction caused by the celestial event, as well as drug or alcohol impairment. Even viewing the eclipse from unsafe roadside locations can further add to the dangers at hand.
Dr. John Staples, a clinical associate professor at the University of British Columbia, emphasized the importance of taking proactive measures to prevent future disasters. He advises drivers to adhere to speed limits, minimize distractions, maintain a safe distance between vehicles, wear seatbelts, and never drive while impaired.
What Causes the Issues?
Contrary to common assumption, the rise in fatal crashes is not directly linked to the darkness brought on by the solar eclipse. Dr. Redelmeier clarifies that the problem lies in the hours surrounding the event when people are commuting to their observation spots and returning home afterward. It is during this time that individuals tend to engage in festivities and peculiar behavior – resembling that of a New Year’s Eve road trip.
Through their meticulous analysis of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System, Redelmeier and Staples observed a distinct temporal pattern. Fatal crash rates increased before the eclipse, decreased during the event, and then spiked to nearly 50% above the average after the eclipse concluded.
Redelmeier reiterates the urgent need for adhering to standard safety measures. This includes obeying speed limits, minimizing distractions while driving, using turning signals consistently (yes, BMW drivers, this applies to you too), making lane changes carefully, and, most importantly, wearing your seatbelt.
