The 30-year-old convict, Nestor Hernandez, had a history of parole violations but was allowed to walk free, endangering the lives of innocent people. Now facing murder charges, Hernandez committed this heinous act while his girlfriend was giving birth.
Hernandez had been on parole since 2015 for an aggravated robbery, requiring him to wear an ankle monitor for authorities to track his movements. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice granted him special permission to be with his girlfriend during the birth of their child. However, Methodist Hospital Chief Glen Fowler claims that the hospital was not informed about the presence of a violent criminal.
On October 21, 2022, Hernandez arrived at the hospital after his girlfriend had given birth. However, instead of experiencing the joy of becoming a father, Hernandez started behaving strangely, accusing his girlfriend of infidelity. Fuelled by jealousy, he believed the baby might not be his own.
Due to the lack of communication between the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and the hospital, no one was prepared for the dangerous situation that unfolded. As Hernandez grew more agitated, he searched the room for another man and pulled out a firearm. He violently attacked his girlfriend, causing severe injuries, and made alarming calls to his family.
In a horrifying turn of events, nurse social worker Jacqueline Pokuaa unknowingly entered the room. Hernandez callously shot her. In the hallway, nurse Annette Flowers heard the gunfire and looked into the room, only to be shot herself.
Methodist Hospital Police Sergeant Robert Rangel witnessed the second nurse being shot and swiftly took action. He called for backup and shot Hernandez in the leg, preventing his escape. After a tense standoff, Hernandez was arrested and taken into custody.
